Choosing Colours and Fonts for Celebration Text

Text Fireworks Blog · Updated July 2026

Two birthday videos can use the same words and feel completely different — one elegant, one chaotic — purely because of colour and font choices. You don't need a design degree; you need about five rules. Here they are, written for glowing text on dark backgrounds (the situation in every firework, neon and marquee video).

Rule 1: match the palette to the person, not the occasion

Rule 2: on a dark background, brightness is contrast

On white paper, dark text wins. On a night sky it's reversed: your colours need to be light to read. Pure deep red or navy nearly vanishes on black — that's why every palette in the firework tool is built from bright, slightly-whitened tones. If you ever design your own glowing text, test it at arm's length on a phone: if a letter goes muddy, lighten it.

Rule 3: bold fonts, always

Glow effects, particles and bulbs all need somewhere to live. A thin elegant script has no interior — hearts won't fit inside it, bulbs can't sit on its strokes, and glow swallows its shape. This is why real marquee rental letters are always chunky. Use heavy weights: the "modern bold" and "tall & heavy" styles hold effects best; the serif works for gold-and-elegant looks; the playful rounded font suits kids' videos.

Rule 4: two lines beat one

Typography's oldest trick is hierarchy: the wish in one style of attention, the name in another. In practice for a firework video, that simply means putting "Happy Birthday" on line one and the name alone on line two. The name gets its own moment — and in a per-letter rainbow palette, its own colours.

Rule 5: when in doubt, fewer colours

Rainbow works because it's systematic — every letter a different hue in order, which reads as intentional. What fails is random mixing: two palettes' worth of colours fighting each other. Pick one palette and let it do its job. If you want variation between videos, change palette per video, not within one.
